The 24-year old from Brazil finished equal 5th in the 2019 Ripcurl Pro, after a disputed disqualification for interference in the quarter final. On the 28th of July 2021, he won the gold medal in Tokyo at the first ever Olympic surfing competition.
Beating current world champ Gabriel Medina in the quarter finals, JJ later outscored Filipe Toledo in a close battle to take out the Ripcurl Pro title for 2019
