Ruins of homes from the 1973 volcanic eruption on Vestmannæyjar. Over time, some homes have been uncovered from the metres of ash that fell and caused the full evacuation of the island. There is a detailed 'Pompei of the North' exhibition built around some of the excavated buildings.
Ruins of homes from the 1973 volcanic eruption on Vestmannæyjar. Over time, some homes have been excavated from the metres of ash that fell and caused the full evacuation of the island. The volcanic debris is now a good source of road and building material for the island. Many houses are still buried.
Vestmannæyjar (Westman Islands) off the south coast of Iceland is one of the few places you can camp inside a volcanic crater, and beside an 18-hole golf course no less! The rim of the crater rises high on two sides, with a steep and slippery walk affording a bird's-eye view in all directions. [201712.
