The church sits alone, surrounded by relics of the coal industry. The wooden towers used to ferry baskets of coal from the mines. The chimney to the right is the existing coal-fired power station, due to be shut down in 2023, with diesel generators to be used until renewables can take over by 2030.
Sadly, this is the site where two people lost their lives and 11 homes were irrepairably damaged in an avalanche just before Christmas 2015. Here, the debris has been fully cleared as the options of rebuilding or installing an avalanche barrier are considered.
